The radiator in your sedan, crossover, SUV, pickup truck, van, or coupe is an essential component when it comes to maintaining an optimal engine temperature. Without it, and the work it does, your engine will suffer -- and potentially suffer catastrophically expensive damage -- due to the extreme hear it generates when delivering the power that moves you down the road.

How Radiators Work

The radiator connects to your engine by way of a series of hoses that route a coolant from the radiator to your motor and then back. That liquid is typically a mixture of antifreeze and water, though you probably change the formulation in winter to emphasize the antifreeze aspect. The coolant collects the heat that's been building up in your engine, and then makes its way back to the radiator. There, the heat evaporates through the radiator's finned surface, releasing harmlessly into the atmosphere so that the coolant can return to the engine anew.

Eventually, though, even the best radiator components can go bad. Signs of this include:

  • Puddles of green, red, or yellow liquid under your vehicle
  • The engine starts to overheat
  • Weird engine noises
  • Your "Low Coolant" light comes on
  • You notice the sweet, syrupy smell of ethylene glycol in the air
