The Jeep Scrambler, also known as the CJ-8, was part of Jeep’s iconic CJ lineup that ran from 1944 to 1986. The CJ series included open-bodied off-road vehicles that the Jeep brand is widely known for, as well as some compact pickup trucks. The Jeep Scrambler was produced from 1981 to 1986 and was a long-wheelbase pickup truck version of its predecessor, the CJ-7. While over 1.5 million units were made throughout the Jeep CJ’s run, only about 28,000 Jeep Scrambler models were produced, making it a prized collectible. Resembling today’s Jeep Gladiator, the Jeep Scrambler has become a beloved truck among many Jeep enthusiasts.

There was no V8 engine option for the Scrambler during its five-year run. It was initially powered by a 2.5-liter Iron Duke straight-four engine but eventually came standard with a 2.5-liter carbureted I4 engine that produced 105 hp. A 4.2-liter I6 engine that produced 115 hp was later available, and it was paired with a Tremec T176 four-speed manual transmission. A Chrysler Torqueflite 904 automatic transmission option was also available with the I4 engine.

Why Are Jeep Scramblers So Expensive?

With less than 30,000 CJ-8s made in history, compared to the CJ-7’s 379,000, Jeep Scramblers are so rare that a well-maintained model can sell for as much as $40,000. Jeep CJ models embody the brand’s rich history, and the low production volume of the CJ-8 makes it a desired collectible for Jeep fans.
